2011 January Code S Round of 32: Group D

Group D is loaded with high profile players:

Player Code S Rank2010 Results
TSLRainT#6DNQ, ro32, second place
ZeNEXKyrixZT-#16DNQ, ro8, ro64
choyafOuPT-#16DNQ, ro64, ro8
TSLTrickster (aka sSKS)PT-#19ro8, DNQ, DNQ

TSLRain was a controversial finalist in GSL 3 after he beat IMNesTea in the quarterfinals with nothing but SCV/marine rushes. ZeNEXKyrix served as the pioneer of the high economy baneling strategy (on television, at least) and you may recall his epic GSL 2 match against MarineKingPrimeWE, though he also won the Code S special tournament between GSL 2 and GSL 3. choyafOu is the only relatively unknown player, though he was in the quarterfinals of GSL 3 last month. TSLTrickster was one of the best players in the beta back when he was known as Tester. Expected to win GSL 1, he lost to STRainBOw in the quarterfinals and then to everyone's shock he failed to qualify for the next two GSL tournaments. Finally he's made it back to the big stage looking to prove his qualification troubles were an aberration.

Like yesterday, the group D VOD has some basic subtitled video interviews with each player before their first game (but this time the game 2 interview is at the beginning of the game 2 video, not the end of the game 1 section).

2011 January Code S Round of 32: Group C

Group C is the first group to have a player from every race:

Player Code S Rank2010 Results
HongUnPrimeWEP#7ro8, ro64, ro4
SlayerSBoxeRT#9DNQ, ro4, ro32
oGsTheWindZT-#23ro32, ro16, ro64
oGsHyperdubTT-#23ro16, ro64, ro32

SlayerSBoxeR is the most famous Starcraft 1 player of all time, so presumably he needs no introduction. HongUn is a very solid Protoss who was consistently good but had his best results in December's GSL 3, so his form has been strong lately. oGsTheWind is one of oGs' coaches and a consistent if unspectacular Zerg. oGsHyperdub is best known in the foreign community for beating LiquidTLO in GSL 1 but in the later tournaments he wasn't as impressive.

When checking out the group C VOD there are some basic subtitled video interviews with each player before their first game (for game 2 it's on the end of the game 1 video).

2011 January Code A Round of 32: Day 2

2011 GSL January Code A: Day 2

It's day 2 of the Code A tournament, but only one match was played as ReXZanDarke had to withdraw from the tournament from personal reasons. That means TSLAlive (known as aLivefOu in GSL 3) advances to the round of 16 by forfeit. Today's matchups:

2011 January Code S Round of 32: Group B

Group B is definitely one of the stronger groups, and that's saying a lot:

Player Code S Rank2010 Results
TSLFruitDealerZ#1Champion, ro32, ro8
oGsZenioZ#14ro32, ro8, ro64
IMmvpT#27DNQ, ro32, ro16
oGsjookToZ#32ro32, ro64, ro64

FruitDealer needs no introduction, and Zenio and mvp have both looked dominating at times. oGsjookTo is clearly the odd man out, but with each player generally playing each other just once (unless tiebreakers are needed) there's plenty of opportunity for even the worst player (and using GomTV's rankings jookTo is the worst player in Code S) to upset the best (again, by their stats that would be FruitDealer).

As discussed yesterday, the structure for the round of 32 is single game round robin where you advance with two wins and are eliminated with two losses. GomTV puts all the group's action into one VOD though you can skip between games.

2011 January Code A Round of 32: Day 1

Today is the first day of January's Code A tournament. This is a 32 player tournament whose top 8 finishers will get a chance to play their way into Code S by beating the early losers of this month's Code S tournament. Meanwhile, the bottom 16 players (everyone who loses in the opening round) will be have to defeat hopefuls from Code B to avoid relegation.

Unlike the odd Code S round robin format, the Code A tournament is a best of 3 single elimination tournament similar to the 2010 GSL tournaments.

2011 January Code S Round of 32: Group A

The new year is here and with it, the first GSL tournament of 2011. GomTV has announced some updates and clarifications about the 2011 league structure, but we'll have to save those for another day because Group A matches happened on the morning of January 2. To review, Group A is:

Player Code S Rank2010 Results
IMNesTeaZ#2ro64, Champion, ro8
MakaPrimeWET#10ro8, ro32, ro16
PoltPrimeWET#23ro32, ro64, ro16
TheBestfOuT#29DNQ, ro64, ro16

The structure for the round of 32 is single game round robin...sort of. Actually, it's not a full round robin. Basically, it's a "first to two wins advances, first to two losses is out" system. Players are matched up initially by seed, then based on the previous game's results. Under this system usually only 5 games are needed but occasionally more might be required.

The top two players when the dust settles move on to the round of 16 and another group stage. The bottom two players will have to fight for their Code S positions in the relegation tournament. Although both will be in danger, the third place finisher will have a much better chance, so there should always be incentive to fight even after being assured of elimination from the main tournament.

GomTV released all the group A action as a single VOD, though of course it is split out by game the way match VODs were in the 2010 tournaments. Note the first match also includes the pyrotechnics-heavy stage introduction of all 32 Code S players and a short interview with Blizzard balance designer David Kim. Match three begins with an amusing set of predictions from the Korean commentators (with some English subtitles, ala "Bad boy image of EGIdrA is an issue!") as well as thoroughly subtitled interviews with all four Group A players. Match four opens with a mostly incomprehensible humor sketch.
